I think we’ll head down to Yuma, maybe grab a land coach back east. I don’t know what we’ll find out there. All I know is that we need to tell people what we saw here today. General, by now I trust you’ve received my report on the incident of 23 December, what some are now calling the “Battle of Defiance.” Our engineers are still analyzing the cause of the explosion that wiped out the Ekaru Kome and a significant number of EMC troops. 3rd California Division didn’t move in until after the battle—we won’t have exact casualty numbers until the end of the month.
Our situation is precarious. We’ve detained several members of the 9th Division, Mechanized Infantry (the Iron Demons), who defied orders and were found to be fraternizing with the enemy. I had intended to court-marshal the lot of them, but now civilians are coming out of the woodwork in support of these men. They’ve begun calling them “The Defiant Few” and are lauding them as heroes. Any punishment may be met with public reprisals. Please advise.

I’m well aware of the situation, Galen. Those idiot civilians have been telling their version of the events, and it’s spreading like wildfire. Command is worried that this peacenik movement could spread to our other units across the country. The center must hold. Deal with the 9th, but do it quietly. Ship them off somewhere—Denver maybe. Call it a peacekeeping mission. Just get them the hell out of the limelight. We don’t want to create any martyrs.

I’ve done as you asked, Sir, but it may be too late. The situation is growing rapidly out of control. We’ve had over 600 desertions in the last 72 hours alone. Human and Votan civilians are demonstrating outside our bases in the northern sector. They’re demanding an end to the conflict. I’ve ordered my men to refrain from engaging the protestors, and there have been no incidents of violence. Yet. Awaiting further orders.

The anti-war movement has infected our top leadership, and the people are clamoring for peace. The EMC is barely holding together as it is. There’s talk of disbanding it entirely and forming a new mixed-race government. We’re doing everything we can to control the situation.

I still can’t believe it, but it looks like this thing’s really going to happen. They’re about to ratify this new “Earth Republic” constitution. It’s only a matter of time before armistice is declared. I expect that means we’ll be out of a job. So we wait… for now. Go with the flow. But make no mistake, Galen—this is not over. We will not give up this fight.
